The recent record-breaking sales and profits numbers from Amazon illustrate how competitive the global online marketplace has become. Many retailers who have been in business for generations are facing tough times as the internet and ecommerce change the people search for and buy the products they need. A recent report highlights some of the ways businesses can use deals and promotions to attract new customers and keep them loyal to a particular store or online retailer.

 

 

A new survey from RetailMeNot shows deals have substantial influence on customer acquisition, brand loyalty and brand perception among consumers, especially among millennials. The idea that coupons drive sales shouldn't surprise anyone, but the power of promotions to improve a business can be underestimated.

 

 

The survey found that two-thirds of consumers have "made a purchase they weren't originally planning to make solely based on finding a coupon or discount". Similarly, four out of five (80 percent) said they feel encouraged to make a first-time purchase with a brand that is new to them if they found an offer or discount. This is why it's a good idea to use new customer special offers to attract consumers in online ads. Seeing a good special can encourage people to buy when they otherwise wouldn't have.

 

 

Besides being helpful at luring a consumer's attention, deals and coupons play a large role in what consumers decide to buy. The RetailMeNot survey found that nearly three-fourths (74 percent) of Americans say offers are a top factor when deciding where and what to buy online. And four out of five (81 percent) Americans say finding a great offer or discount is on their mind throughout the entire purchase journey.

 

 

There's an argument to be made that online retailers should have their current specials listed in a way that's easy to search for on Google. Nearly all of the consumers (94 percent) in the RetailMeNot survey said they search for a deal or offer when shopping online. Three out of five (62 percent) consumers agreed with the statement "they cannot complete a purchase before searching for an offer." And even if someone makes it through the sales funnel to the checkout screen, coupons can help the 75 percent of Americans who have abandoned an online shopping cart have done so due to issues with cost.

 

 

"Today's consumers want to feel as if they have spent their money in the smartest way possible, and to do so, they leverage deals throughout the shopping journey, including when deciding where to shop and what to buy," said Marissa Tarleton, chief marketing officer at RetailMeNot, Inc. in a press statement. "These discounts and promotional levers continue to be critical for retailers who want to reach new shoppers to drive incremental sales."

 

 

The survey results also suggest that millenials and young adults are the most effective by promotions-based marketing. Just over half (53 percent) of millennials aged 18 to 34 say they always search for a deal before making a purchase online, compared to 40 percent of baby boomers aged 55+. In fact, nearly seven in 10 (69 percent) millennials surveyed by RetailMeNot say they cannot complete a purchase without first searching for a deal or offer. And eight out of nine (88 percent) say that finding an offer for a brand or retailer that is new to them would encourage a first-time purchase.

 

 

So as the online marketplace grows in competition, business owners and marketers need to aggressively push their promotions to target demographics. This will capture the attention of potential consumers, encourage them to shop with specific retailers or buy certain products, and keeps checkout costs low to prevent abandoned carts.

But RetailMeNot fired back, arguing that there do indeed exist Mary Kay coupons – they’re just issued by the company’s independent contractors, rather than by Mary Kay itself. Many of the coupons didn’t actually work when a shopper purchased from a different independent contractor, but all Mary Kay coupon codes on the site were provided by third parties, RetailMeNot said, so all it did was "share this publicly available information with consumers”.

 

 

RetailMeNot and Mary Kay Settle Coupon Code Fight

 

 

 

 

Apparently all it took was a couple of disclaimers to defuse a coupon battle that had two foes invoking everything from fraud, to freedom of speech, to argue their case.

 

 

Cosmetics company Mary Kay and online coupon code provider RetailMeNot have jointly agreed to dismiss the lawsuit that Mary Kay filed back in March, accusing RetailMeNot of "running a fraudulent Mary Kay couponing scheme." A federal judge approved the motion on Friday, after the litigants declared that “all matters in controversy between Mary Kay and RetailMeNot, Inc. have been fully compromised and settled.”

 

 

That’s a decided change in tone from earlier this year, when the two parties assumed much more combative positions.

 

 

Mary Kay sued, after it said RetailMeNot failed to act on its request to remove coupons for its products that were posted on the site. "Mary Kay does not publish or distribute Mary Kay coupons or discount offers to the general public or permit others to do so," the lawsuit stated. Therefore, Mary Kay alleged, RetailMeNot was falsely representing to online shoppers that Mary Kay had coupons available, and that Mary Kay approved of the coupons that were posted on the site.

 

 

But RetailMeNot fired back, arguing that there do indeed exist Mary Kay coupons – they’re just issued by the company’s independent contractors, rather than by Mary Kay itself. Many of the coupons didn’t actually work when a shopper purchased from a different independent contractor, but all Mary Kay coupon codes on the site were provided by third parties, RetailMeNot said, so all it did was "share this publicly available information with consumers”.

 

 

The dispute was much larger than just the source and the legitimacy of the coupons, though. Mary Kay took a stand that could have blown a hole through the entire online coupon code industry. It argued that RetailMeNot was violating its trademark, by mentioning Mary Kay on the site at all, misleading consumers into "falsely believing there is an approval, affiliation or partnership between Mary Kay and RetailMeNot." If that argument stood up in court, coupon aggregators or even coupon bloggers could have been prevented from posting any offers other than those provided by and approved by their official business partners.

 

 

 

 

RetailMeNot took issue with that argument, calling it an "attack on the rights of Americans." The company argued that it has “a fundamental right under the First Amendment to use the Mary Kay mark to reference Mary Kay, describe Mary Kay’s products or services, or disseminate information about its online offerings to the public." Warning of the stakes involved, RetailMeNot declared that "Mary Kay’s attempt to use trademark law in a manner that is inconsistent with fundamental principles of free speech should alarm consumers, because it would deprive them of access to information about digital offers for their favorite retailers and brands."

 

 

Considering how vociferously they argued their positions, the two companies are awfully quiet now. In response to a request for comment, Mary Kay spokesperson Rebecca Gibson merely confirmed that the lawsuit had been resolved with a settlement, but declined to comment on its confidential terms. RetailMeNot spokesman Brian Hoyt also cited the confidentiality of the settlement, but added that “we are pleased to resolve the matter.”

 

 

But some apparent terms of the settlement are noticeable even to those who aren’t in the know. If you search for Mary Kay coupons on RetailMeNot today, you’ll notice a few things. First, there’s now a disclaimer at the top of the page, which reads, “Mary Kay does not endorse this page and has no relationship with RetailMeNot.” Second, there’s another disclaimer in the sidebar, stating, “Mary Kay does not sell products directly. Promo codes for use on marykay.com are issued individually by independent beauty consultants (IBCs). Codes offered by one IBC might not be honored by other IBCs.”

 

 

And third, perhaps most importantly, there are no actual Mary Kay coupons listed at all anymore.

 

 

That could actually be good news for Mary Kay shoppers, who may have grown tired of finding purported coupon codes online that never actually worked for them. So in that respect, you can chalk one up for Mary Kay.

 

 

In the meantime, Hoyt says RetailMeNot “will continue to enable consumers across the globe to find hundreds of thousands of digital offers for their favorite retailers and brands.” Many of those retailers and brands have no formal business relationship with RetailMeNot. But if any of them are thinking about suing the coupon aggregator to prevent it from sharing their deals online, they may think twice now.

In 2013, RetailMeNot said, "Coupon usage is ubiquitous." They revealed that 93% of Americans shop with coupons with 29% of Americans using mobile coupons. The Return of RedPlum? RetailMeNot May Be For Sale

 

 

 

 

Three years after RedPlum coupon insert publisher Valassis and RetailMeNot were united under the same corporate umbrella – and RedPlum was subsequently renamed RetailMeNot Everyday – the coupon insert could soon be in need of another rebrand, as the two coupon companies may be uncoupling.

 

 

Bloomberg is reporting that MacAndrews & Forbes, the holding company that controls Vericast, the owner of RetailMeNot and Valassis, is considering a sale of RetailMeNot. A sale may not have a great effect on RetailMeNot’s operations, but it would leave Valassis’ coupon offerings without a name, without a website and without its more well-known corporate partner.

 

 

If RetailMeNot does end up being sold, it would be the latest sale orchestrated by MacAndrews & Forbes owner Ronald Perelman, the billionaire businessman best known as the longtime owner of Revlon. “I realized that for far too long, I have been holding onto too many things that I don’t use or even want,” Perelman said in a statement. “I concluded that it’s time for me to clean house.”

 

 

Others, including the New York Post, are calling it a “signal that the billionaire’s finances may be getting desperate,” noting that Perelman has been “selling off assets like it’s the end of the world,” unloading his stake in a number of companies – often at a loss. He’s also sold off part of his pricey art collection, is reportedly seeking to sell his private jet, his yacht and his $180 million Hamptons estate, and is shopping around other companies, including, possibly, Revlon itself.

Valassis’ coupon business focuses on grocery offers, while RetailMeNot focuses on retailer promo codes. Valassis issues mainly print offers, while RetailMeNot is mainly digital. Two years ago, the two brands merged into one, as Valassis retired the RedPlum name and rebranded its coupon insert and online printable coupon site as RetailMeNot Everyday.

 

 

“This partnership is another step in our continued mission to be the consumer’s ultimate savings resource," a RetailMeNot executive said at the time.

 

 

But earlier this year, the synergy hit a bump in the road, as the RetailMeNot Everday website quit offering printable or digital grocery coupons. So now Valassis’ coupon inserts display the RetailMeNot name, but the RetailMeNot website has little if any association with Valassis’ coupon business.

 

 

In several research reports on parent company Vericast, investment research firm Moody’s has been unimpressed by the pairing. “The acquisition of RetailMeNot has underperformed Moody’s expectations and the business is facing a competitive consumer savings environment,” it said in a report last year. In a followup report earlier this year, it said RetailMeNot “continues to struggle,” while Valassis’ print-based “business model is in secular decline.”

 

 

So if Perelman keeps Valassis and sells RetailMeNot, Valassis’ coupon inserts are going to need another rebrand. And it’s questionable whether there would be any need to bother relaunching a corresponding website, since Valassis no longer has any online coupons to offer.

 

 

If you’re in the market for a coupon company then, RetailMeNot could be yours for just $600 million, slightly less than what Perelman paid for it. If you don’t have that kind of cash handy, better start saving up by clipping coupons from RetailMeNot Everyday – or whatever it ends up being called.

Two-Thirds of Shoppers Check Phones In-Store for Product Information, Skipping Store Associates

 

 

The gap between online and offline shopping continues to close as more customers engage with their mobile devices in-store. Some shoppers choose to engage this way over personal interaction, but that doesn’t mean retailers should give up entirely on educating their store associates.

 

 

According to a March 2019 RetailMeNot study, internet users looking for more information in-store often skip approaching retail associates and go directly to their smartphones. Sixty-nine percent of respondents said they would look for reviews on their phone first, and 53% would search for deals before speaking with an employee.

 

 

A September 2018 survey from HRC Retail Advisory (HRC) found that 59% of US smartphone shoppers used their device in-store to compare costs or search for deals and coupons. And similar to looking up product reviews, more than half of respondents shared product pictures while in-store as a means of soliciting opinions from friends and family.

 

 

Six in 10 US internet users have used digital tools to compare product prices while shopping in-store, according to a November 2018 survey from TD Bank. And 57% of US digital buyers say they check prices through a retailer’s mobile app while shopping in its physical store, per a May 2018 study from RIS News.

 

 

As smartphones increasingly become shopping companions, some retailers may fear patrons will take their business elsewhere. But they should see this as an opportunity to ensure their own mobile sites and apps provide maximum convenience and usability for in-store customers.

 

 

And retailers are catching on to this—49% said the mobile experience was one of their top customer engagement priorities, according to a 2019 report from BPR Consulting. Acknowledging the importance of mobile is a smart move toward innovation, even though offline sales will still account for 89.1% of total retail sales in the US this year, per our estimates.

 

 

That is not to say that marketers should move away from investing in store associates altogether. They should make sure their employees are knowledgeable, well-trained and readied with mobile devices of their own. According to November 2018 research from Zebra Technologies, 66% of retail store associates feel they could provide better customer service if equipped with tablets.

 

 

With mobile technology on hand, Retail Touchpoints found that store associates are able to provide customers with product availability information, as well as process online orders of out-of-stock items and transact mobile payments.

 

 

And giving tech assistants to retail associates is a goal for many companies. Among the retailers surveyed by Zebra Technologies, 60% plan to increase spending on handheld devices by more than 6%, and 21% plan to up their tablet budget by more than 10% within the next three years.
